Blake Lively v. Justin Baldoni: The story behind the screen

The Hollywood Reporter

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, the stars of the 2024 movie, It Ends With Us, are at the center of a heated legal battle. The drama started when Lively accused Baldoni of inappropriate behavior on set. She said he made her uncomfortable with unwanted comments and actions, including trying to kiss her during a scene without prior discussion. Lively described these moments as violations of her boundaries and trust, starting, “No one should have to feel unsafe in their workplace, especially when clear agreements are in place”.

Baldoni has denied the accusations, calling them baseless. He released a 10-minute video from the set, which he claims shows his behavior was professional. “I have always conducted myself with integrity and respect”, Baldoni said in a statement. However, Mia Schachter, the film’s intimacy coordinator, reviewed the footage and backed Lively’s claims. Schachter stated, “What I saw in the footage was a clear disregard for the agreed upon boundaries”.

The situation escalated rapidly. Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni for harassment and defamation. Baldoni defended himself by suing her, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist Leslie Sloan for 400 million dollars, accusing them of attempting to destroy his career and reputation.

“These accusations are not just false but a targeted attack on my character,” Baldoni asserted in his countersuit. On top of that, Baldoni filed a $250 million lawsuit against The New York Times, claiming they published false information and ignored evidence supporting him.

The controversy has sparked mixed reactions. Many of Lively’s friends and colleagues, including her co-stars from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and the book’s author, Colleen Hoover, have shown their support for her. “I stand by Blake and believe her”, Hoover posted on social media. On the other hand, some commentators, like Megyn Kelly, have questioned the strength of Lively’s claims after seeing the leaked video, calling them weak. “From what I’ve seen, there’s no solid proof of wrongdoing”, Kelly commented during her podcast.

This case has brought up important conversations about workplace boundaries and accountability in Hollywood. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for February 2025, and the case’s outcome could impact both Lively’s and Baldoni’s careers. For now, fans and industry insiders alike are keeping a close eye on every new development.
