On January 24th, 2023, the annual Academy Awards (Oscars) nominations were announced, making waves for a multitude of feedback, both positive and negative, from movie fans, professional critics, and even film crews themselves.
The Academy Awards first occurred on May 26, 1929, and is now one of the highest merit awards to receive in the entertainment industry, the rest are the Tony award, Grammy award, and the Emmy award. One of the main goals of people in the entertainment industry is to receive all these awards and be an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT) recipient, but it has only been done by 18 people, most recently at the 2023 Grammy Awards, Viola Davis.
As of 2023, the Oscars have 24 categories, and some of the nominations for these categories are heavily agreed upon, like Top Gun: Maverick for best picture. With a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, this is easily one of the fan favorite nominees! However, according to the rest of the world, the Oscars has a couple of snubs this year, and this includes the lack of nominations for the movie Pearl, starring Mia Goth. Pearl has a 91% on rotten tomatoes, and even has an internet heavy fanbase, with audio from the movie being placed all over one of the biggest social media apps, TikTok. Though, there is nothing that can be done about the nominations, and who wins the categories, which is added reasoning for fans and film crews to dislike the Oscars. The Oscars are chosen by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). In order to become a member, you must be sponsored by two members of the academy, which makes becoming a member extremely exclusive.
Though many do not agree with every aspect of the Oscars, the event continues and will occur on March 12th, 2023. Many actors and film staff will be working on obtaining the award and the honor and respect that comes with it, as fans continue to cheer them on!
