The benefits of school sports

Sports include any form of competitive physical activity or game that aims to use, maintain, or improve physical ability to those who do them. School sports are a good way to improve students’ health and influence students to get better grades, come to school more, and stay out of trouble.

School sports are a way to help students improve their health. According to Noah Webster Educational Foundation (NWEF), it states that “As the issue of childhood obesity takes on more prominence, sports provide a way for kids to get the exercise
needed to stay in shape”. Another way it helps students’ health as stated by NWEF is that “It offers students the opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills, and can encourage students to spend time with other students they don’t otherwise associate with. School sports can also be more affordable than those run by outside organizations, giving more students an opportunity to participate.”

School sports can benefit students academically. In NWEF, it clearly mentioned that “Studies have shown a positive connection between sports activities and improved memory and cognitive functions of the brain. This means that students can perform better in academics if sports are made a part of their routine.” It also stated that “the results of the study showed that student-athletes had higher GPAs and a 10% higher rate for graduating high school.” The School sports coaches do not tolerate a GPA lower than a 2.0 so this basically makes students participating in sports do good in school academically and to stay out of trouble.

School sports can help students with their daily lives. Playing school sports can teach life lessons. School sports offer students the opportunity to learn and practice traits that will come in handy not only in their immediate school life, but also later on in life. In NWEF, it stated that “Combining sports and school requires an ability to self-regulate. Getting to practice on time with the proper equipment helps student- athletes learn to organize themselves and say no to other activities. Learning when to say no is a great skill to carry over to adulthood.” It also stated that, “sports teach quality life lessons such as mental, physical, and tactical discipline. Students must learn to follow rules and experience practicing restraint. They also have to master obeying the coach and respecting decisions. All of these are good life lessons that can propel them toward real-life success.”

To sum it all up, School Sports help the students and the school in general. It helps students by improving their academic grades, their physical health, and it teaches them responsibility/time management. It also helps the school by improving their rating. This is because the students are doing well academically and on their behavior. There are so many benefits to school sports that encourage more students to be a part of them. School sports are also something that represents the school athletically and helps the school get known more because of their athletic programs.

If you’re interested, in Miami Springs Senior High, there are a wide variety of sports that are available to all students. In the Fall, we offer soccer, golf, volleyball, football, baseball, cross country, basketball, bowling, and tennis. In spring, we have baseball, basketball, track and field, and cross country. We have many more sport programs, and we are still adding even more to the list.
