SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and other welfare programs are in place to help low-income people and families. Occasionally, people will take advantage of this financial help and sell their benefits for cash. Most of the time people who sell their benefits are just individual sellers. What many people do not realize is that this federal crime carries a heavy sentence.
Broward County police officers discovered a multitude of fraudulent offences coming from a chain of businesses in Broward County. An investigation which spanned over 5 years uncovered 3.7 million dollars taken from tax payers in the form of false business transactions – trades from 50 cents to a dollar each.
The investigation included the efforts of multiple agencies all working together to investigate this assault on tax payers money. The scandal concluded with most of the suspects charged, ranging in offenses, some with heavier federal charges than others.
