The Impact of Social Media on Modern News Consumption

Social media is a big part of many teenagers’ lives. Apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat allow teens to talk with friends, share photos, and stay connected. For many, it is an easy and fast way to communicate. It also gives teens a chance to show their creativity and connect with others who share similar interests. Some teens who are shy or quiet may find it easier to express themselves online than in person.
However, social media can also have negative effects. Many teens feel pressure to post perfect pictures or look a certain way, which can lower their self-esteem and make them feel insecure. Seeing other people’s lives online can lead to unhealthy comparisons and cause feelings of sadness or loneliness. Dr. Jean Twenge, a psychology professor, states in her book iGen that “there is a clear link between screen time and lower well-being among adolescents.”
Online bullying, arguments in group chats, or being left out can also damage real-life friendships. In addition, using social media excessively can affect sleep, concentration, and overall mental health.
In conclusion, social media has both positive and negative sides. It helps teens stay connected and express themselves, but it can also lead to stress and emotional harm. It is important to use social media in a healthy way—such as taking breaks, limiting screen time, and spending time with friends in person.
