By: Ceanna Rivas

New York City declared a state of emergency this Friday, September, 2023 due to flash flooding, making this the wettest September in New York since 1882. Many of the city’s forms of transportation such as the subway or the highways were flooding, including at least one terminal LaGuardia airport, before it quickly reopened. No deaths or injuries have been reported due to the flood but a state of emergency was also declared in new jersey, just across the Hudson River from New York. First responders have also rescued several citizens from their vehicles and basement apartments. As month worth of rain has fallen in Brooklyn and in Manhattan, nearly 2 inches fell in an hour. Many business owners are facing expensive damages, like resident Kelly Hayes, stating that the damage would total to around 25k-30k for her restaurant / bar and her neighborhood. Officials have confirmed that they believe this flooding was in thanks to climate change.
