Rare meteor mistaken for bright light over Michigan

By: Genesis Santos

Experts in Detroit say the bright light and a thunderous sound in the sky above Michigan was a meteor.  The American Meteor Society says it received reports of a fireball in the sky from hundreds of callers on January 16, 2018, including many reports in the Detroit area. Some reports also came from as far as Ontario, Canada. Some residents remember their house shaking. The American Meteor Society says the reports suggest a space rock penetrated deep into the Earth’s atmosphere before it broke apart. The U.S. Geological Survey added that it registered as a 2.0 magnitude earthquake in Michigan. Meteors happening over Michigan are rare, but if you go to another place in the world they happen every few months.
