Ladies and gentlemen, it has finally happened… the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series! This is the first time that the Cubs have won the World Series since 1908. Let us take a look back at who was alive the last time the Cubs won the World Series…
-A 13-year-old Babe Ruth
That was roughly 110 years ago, and the last time the Cubbies even went to the Series was 1945. Now that we got the historic aspect of the victory out-of-the-way, lets talk some baseball.
World Series MVP: Ben Zobrist
My MVP: Kris Bryant
Game 7 Hero On Offense: Ben Zobrist
Game 7 Hero On Defense: Kris Bryant
Game 7 Surprise: David Ross single shot home run in the 6th inning.
The game started out with Dexter Fowler hitting a home run on the very first at bat of the game! The starting pitchers for each team were Corey Kluber for Cleveland and Kyle Hendricks for Chicago. Kyle Hendricks pitched a gem through 5 innings, allowing 1 run off of a sac fly that allowed a tag up from third to home base. Then came Jon Lester with his catcher David Ross (this was David Ross’s last major league game, by the way). A wild pitch that hit David Ross in the head allowed two runs to be scored by Cleveland, making the score 5-3 with Chicago leading. A David Ross home run brought it up to 6-3. All hope seemed lost when Aroldis Chapman came in to pitch. With two outs left in the 8th inning, and a man on base off of a single, Brandon Guyer hit a HUGE RBI double to score the man on base, making the game 6-4. In came Rajai Davis. I kid you not, with two outs left and in the 8th inning, off of Aroldis Chapman, Rajai Davis hit an absolute bomb into left field for a home run that sent the Progressive Field in to a frenzy. The home run by Davis hit the camera stationed at the wall.
Going into the 9th inning, Brian Shaw came in for Cody Allen to try to shut the Cubs out. He succeeded, but so did Aroldis Chapman, in shutting out the Indians and sending the game in to extra innings. 2016, Cubs vs Indians, extra innings, rain delay. This was insane. It was the Cubs that went on offense first after the 17 minute rain delay, and Ben Zobrist delivered. The score going into the bottom of the 10th was 8-6, Chicago. The Indians scored once, but Kris Bryant got the game winning out to make the Chicago Cubs world champions. What a time to be alive!
Oh, and LeBron was there to witness it all. What irony, helping your team overcome a 3-1 deficit, only to see your hometown’s baseball team do the opposite.
Anyways, Cubbies are the world champs!
