Likes, Links, and Loneliness: The New Face of Student Socializing
By: Hailey Leon
Social media has fundamentally changed how students socialize in person. Apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok allow friends to stay connected all day by sharing messages, pictures, and videos instantly. While these platforms help maintain friendships outside of school, they also bring unique challenges. Many students feel intense pressure to post the ‘perfect’ content or accumulate likes, which can create unnecessary tension. Furthermore, misunderstandings in online messages can lead to arguments that likely wouldn’t happen during face-to-face conversations.
Another significant effect is the feeling of being left out. When classmates post photos from events, those who weren’t included may feel isolated or hurt. On the other hand, social media can also reinforce friendships by providing a space for support, encouragement, and shared interests. Ultimately, parents and teachers encourage a balance between online and in-person connections. By using these tools responsibly, students can enjoy staying connected without letting digital drama harm their real-world friendships.
