Not So Ugly After All

The Ugly Stepsister is a Norwegian body horror film released on January 23, 2025, written, and directed by Emilie Blitchfeldt. A nightmarish reimagining of the Brothers Grimm’s Cinderella, the first follows Elvira, a lonely and naïve young woman, as she undergoes a disturbing transformation-both physically and psychological-in a desperate bid to win the love of Prince Julian and outshine her stunning stepsister, Agnes. Elvira, portrayed hauntingly by Lea Myren, is introduced with braces, pigtails, and a childlike infatuation with love and poetry. She’s chastised by her domineering mother for romantic fantasies, especially those involving the prince. The family moves in with Agnes’s father, expecting wealth, only to find he is destitute and was hoping they were the ones with money.

When the royal family issues a decree inviting all eligible noblewomen to a grand ball where Prince Julian will choose a bride, Elvira becomes obsessed with transforming herself into something worthy of his affection. Her desire is rooted not only in fantasy, but in the unspoken rivalry with Agnes, who is effortlessly beautiful and socially dominant. Shortly after the decree, Elvira catches Agnes in a secret sexual encounter with the staple boy, Isak. The scene leaver her shocked, distributed-and fascinated. But jealousy and ambition override any empathy. She tattles to her mother, setting off a brutal chain of events: Agnes is demoted to a servant, and Isak is stripped naked and cast into the forest while villagers hurl stones at him for defiling a noblewoman.

With her rival disgraced and her obsession deepening. Elvira embarks on a grotesque transformation. She begins ballet lesson to appear more graceful and undergoes horrific medieval-inspired cosmetic procedures- removing her braces, reshaping her nose, and sewing false eyelashes directly into the eyelids- all in pursuit of an idealized beauty that might win her the prince. Through Elvir’s increasing distorted perspective, The Ugly Stepsister explores the dark underbelly of fairy-tail dreams: the cruelty of beauty standards, the violence of repression, and the psychological toll of being overlooked. Lea Myren delivers a chilling performance set on the transformation of an innocent young girl into one of full of obsession, and self-destruction.
