The Rise of Anxiety in the Digital Age

By: Jessica Vieyto

Anxiety has become more common in today’s world and a big reason is the way we use technology.  Social media can make people feel pressured to look perfect and compare their lives to others which can lead to stress and low self-esteem.  Constant notifications, negative news, and being online all the time can also feel overwhelming.

Spending too much time on phones or computers can hurt sleep, reduce in person social time, and increase feelings of loneliness – all things that add to anxiety.  Apps and websites are designed to keep us hooked, which makes it hard to take a break and relax.  Young people are especially affected because they worry about fitting in and getting likes and attention online.

Technology itself isn’t bad, but it’s important to use it in a healthy way.  Taking screen breaks, spending time offline, and being mindful of how we use social media can help lower anxiety and improve mental health.
