Animals being affected by LA wildfires
By: Abigail Contreras
The California wildfires greatly affected the local wildlife. Many animals lost their homes and had to flee, but some of them cannot escape the flames in time. Larger animals, such as deer and coyotes, try to find safer areas but often end up in cities, where they are exposed to more dangers. The amount of smoke coming from the fires irritates their lungs and is not healthy for them.
Los Angeles wildfires have caused many pets and wildlife to become displaced. Rescue teams, which include the ASPCA and Best Friends Animal Society, work hard to reunite pets with their owners. More than 800 animals have been cared for, and local veterinarians have provided temporary shelter. Many pets were returned to their families thanks to these efforts but some didn’t.
In this case, they lose sources of food and shelter, hence making it even more difficult for them to survive. Long-term effects on wildlife and ecosystems are prevalent for years afterward as the area recovers.
