Since President Trump took office, he has introduced numerous controversial changes to our government, from imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada to renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. However, the rise in tariffs has become a major issue, as a significant portion of the goods we consume come from other countries. In a short amount of time, Trump has already implemented tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China.

Tariffs, essentially taxes on imported goods, have been proposed by Trump as a way to curb the fentanyl trade from Mexico. However, critics argue this will just drive up prices on everyday items. Products from Mexico—like fruits, vegetables, and agave-based beverages—are expected to see price hikes. Similarly, goods from Canada, such as lumber and maple syrup, might also become more expensive. In the end, many items are likely to cost significantly more. And with the Super Bowl on the horizon, it’s a tough blow since Mexico is the U.S.’s top avocado supplier, meaning we could be facing a shortage or soaring prices for avocados.
