Career choices are not easy to make

You probably remember being asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up? What is your major?” While some people have it all figured out, for many others, these questions can be daunting and not easily answered. In American, culture we are expected to be decisive about the direction of our careers and it is generally disappointing to be unsure about what we want to do with our lives. The importance we place on being “decided” in our society can make those who are “undecided” about their future career feel as if something is wrong with them.
However, an “undecided” person who is actively exploring and learning about career opportunities may very well find themselves following an unexpected, but fulfilling, career.
Let’s go over some ways that may help you find a career match for you.
- Consider your personality and preferences: One of the most important things in finding a career is finding something that aligns with your personality and interests. Working in a field that you enjoy will make it a more enjoyable experience.
- Find your skills: Figure out which skills you have that could be useful in a career. For example, if you have an outgoing personality, good social and communication skills you might investigate sales representative, public relations specialist, social worker, and so on.
- Consult professionals in various fields: Connect with professionals in fields that interest you. Start by saying you’re considering a career like their career and ask questions about the field.
- Talk to family members and friends: Ask for feedback from people who are close to you. Ask friends, family members and other people you trust what roles they could envision you doing for a living. You can also inquire about the companies they could see you work for.
Overall, always make the best decision for yourself, whatever makes you happy and always remember you can change careers at any point.
Have fun and explore!
