Natural disasters affecting Florida heavily

By: Abigail Contreras

There is a lot of climate changes happening right now around the world. Florida is currently be found with climate changes that is already deeply affecting Florida, particularly due to rising sea levels and extreme weather incidents. With its extended coastline, the state remains in a vulnerable position and is at an increased risk of flooding across low-lying regions at high tide. There is flooding on very sunny cities like Miami and Tampa, which haveJH become quite regular and problematic for day-to-day living, and thus threatening infrastructure. Warmer ocean waters are also feeding more powerful hurricanes, such as the tragic impacts of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. All these changes threaten not only the environment but also test communities for resiliency and their local economies.

Climate change also puts at risk Florida’s unique ecosystems, from the Everglades to coral reefs. With rising temperatures come changing precipitation patterns that disrupt habitats, make vulnerable species suffer, and cause coral bleaching events. The tourism sector is a staple in Florida’s economy but is being affected by climate change through impacts on natural attractions and increased hurricane risks. In addition, coastal real estate markets feel the pressure from properties potentially losing value and increased insurance costs in flood-prone areas. For this, Florida is investing in infrastructure improvements and creating policy that advances resilience in the face of continued climate challenges.
