By: Yohanel Lantigua

In recent years, the world of gaming has expanded exponentially, from simple arcade games to complex, immersive virtual universes. With this surge in popularity, however, comes a growing concern: gaming addiction. While gaming can be a fun, engaging, and even educational pastime, for some, it can spiral into an unhealthy obsession, with real world consequences.

There are several factors that contribute to the development of gaming addiction:

1. Escapism: many players use video games as a form of from the real world

2. Dopamine reward system: video games are designed to be rewarding. Each win, level up, or achievement triggers the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine with pleasure and motivation.

3. Social connection: meeting new people online and making bonds and friends.

Some negative effects are:

1. Mental health: individuals addicted to gaming may experience increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.

2. Physical health: gaming for extended periods can have serious physical consequences, including sleep deprivation, poor diet, and lack of exercise

3. Academic and career impact: students or working professionals who prioritize gaming over their responsibilities may see a decline in their academic or job performance.
