2023 AFC Champions

By: Devin Williams

The 2023 AFC championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals, allowed the Chiefs to narrowly advance to the Super Bowl. In a close game, the Chiefs won 23-20, due to a 45-yard field goal by kicker, Harrison Butker, with three seconds remaining in the game. The Bengals defensive end, Joseph Ossai, was also a major factor to the Chiefs championship triumph. He pushed the Chiefs’ Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, costing the Bengals a 15-yard loss on his penalty. Because the Chiefs advanced due to the 15-yard penalty, they were in the right striking distance to kick the winning field goal. Super Bowl LVII would then become the Chiefs’ third time in 5 years and also marks the first time two brothers (Chiefs Tight End, Travis Kelce, and Eagles Center, Jason Kelce) would compete against one another in a Super Bowl. In a post-Super Bowl interview, Patrick Mahomes, while at Disney World, remarked that the competition in the playoffs prepared him to defeat the Bengals – I wonder what Harrison Butker.
