Digital Eye Strain: Why Your Screens Are Wearing You Out
By: Hailey Leon
Spending hours on a phone, tablet, or computer can significantly impact your eye health. When you stare at a screen for extended periods, your eyes become fatigued and dry, often leading to headaches, blurry vision, and physical discomfort. This occurs because digital devices disrupt the natural way our eyes function.
A primary factor is the dramatic reduction in our blink rate. Blinking is essential because it keeps the eyes moist and comfortable—much like applying lotion to dry skin. However, when we are focused on a digital device, we may only blink a third as often as we should. This lack of moisture causes the eyes to feel “gritty,” as if there is sand in them, often resulting in redness, itching, or difficulty focusing.
In addition to dryness, screens emit a specific type of light known as blue light. While some blue light occurs naturally from the sun and is beneficial in moderation, excessive exposure from digital devices can strain the eyes over time. High levels of artificial blue light are increasingly linked to sleep disruption and potential long-term damage to retinal cells.
Beyond the light itself, digital devices force our eye muscles to work overtime. Because eyes must constantly refocus to process pixels and backlighting, the muscles become exhausted from continuous exertion—much like how legs feel after a long run. This exhaustion often manifests as tension headaches or even pain in the neck and shoulders, caused by “hunching” over a device without realizing it.
Over time, these habits can lead to Digital Eye Strain, which acts as an unwanted, high-intensity workout for the eyes. Without regular breaks, the eyes may become sore, weak, or prone to vision problems. Increasingly, children and teens who spend more time on screens than outdoors are developing nearsightedness (myopia). This means they can see objects up close clearly, but distant objects appear blurry—a condition becoming far more common in our digital age.
