Missing Piece of the Puzzle? Why You Need Extracurriculars for College
By: Elani Iglesias
Students in High School have done many different things to prepare themselves for college such as taking AP classes or even trying to maintain their GPA to a minimum of 3.5 and above. But have you ever wondered if you’re missing something in preparation for college? Well, if that’s the case, let me show you one thing that can help with that.
Joining sports or clubs that help you with applying to colleges can demonstrate your character and the type of things you can show. Joining clubs can not only help you develop new skills but can also help with communicating.
The Credibility Factor: Why Colleges Want to See Your Involvement
With these extracurricular activities, this can help demonstrate your commitment towards your school and also show leadership. This is not just a high school rumor; it is a core part of how competitive universities evaluate applicants.
One example comes from the University of Florida, which explicitly states in its admissions review process that it looks for:
“Consistent involvement throughout high school that demonstrates a student’s interests and passions, as well as how applicants contributed to their school, community and/or family.”
This statement confirms that colleges seek students who offer more than just high grades. They are looking for evidence of your character and contribution outside the classroom.
These clubs can help build students with teamwork as it allows students to help out each other. It can also help prepare students for an environment that requires them to be with other students. This is a life skill that students gain just by being active in their school, leading students to prepare for success.
